BENIDORM

Half way along the Costa Blanca region of Spain, between Valencia and Alicante, sits the strange seaside resort of Benidorm. Containing the most high-rise buildings per capita in the World, I’d seen it many times whilst passing by on the Autopista de la Mediterrania and I’d always thought it looked unreal, as if New York City had been dumped on the Spanish coast. So in September 2015 I thought it about time I went and had a proper look. Benidorm has something of a reputation here in the UK as a grotty destination for British holiday makers looking for some cheap sun, beer and all-day full English breakfast and I guess I was rather expecting to find this. But this was nothing like the Benidorm I encountered. It would seem that, once August is over, the Brits disappear and the cheap hotel rooms and bars are filled with Spanish senior citizens. By 11, the beaches were packed with old folks soaking up the sun, doing low impact exercise classes and standing en-masse in the sea. Perhaps I should return to see how the Brits treat the place, but my two days in the company of the elderly Spanish at leisure was a gentle way to view this brutal slice of Spain.
