Memories from the underground
“As an urban historian & photographer, I try to peel back the layers of a city to see what’s underneath”. Steve Duncan began his own personal research by expressing his deep love for New York City, where he lives and works since 1996, exploring its innards with the curiosity and the precision of a speleologist, to return an unexpected image of a truly invisible city. The historic, abandoned, and often inaccessible sites of large cities became the subsequent stages of a fascinating journey into the underground, through shots of undeniable documentary cleanliness, but also full of an emotional charge that’s almost mysterious and arcane. “From the tops of bridges to the depths of sewer tunnels”, Duncan says about his work, “these explorations of the urban environment help me puzzle together the interconnected, multi-dimensional history and complexity of the world’s great cities”.
