MATT MAWSON: “BEIJING - SHANGHAI”

Memories of tomorrow

Once again China. This time through a series that takes a clear and disarming survey on the profound contrasts of a fragmented and schizoid contemporary reality, firmly rooted in ancient traditions and fully oriented, without brakes, toward an economic and technological development. Matt Mawson spent a decade from the mid-80s working with NGO, Aid and Government agencies, documenting conflict and humanitarian crisis situations around the world. It is no coincidence, thus, if his look appears frequently on the move, ready to investigate the reality through its changes on behaviors and usual situations. A new slant, almost “anthropological”, aims at bringing diversity to the surface, making it real wealth. In doing so the London-based photographer is enough keen to extol the beauty that results from the stronger discrepancies and mutations through a notable use of light and composition.
