Too many people. Too little space.
With this series shot in Manila, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, Mads Nissen brings to the fore the problems of overpopulation and poverty, which often go hand-in-hand. A reality, the one implacably portrayed by the Danish photojournalist, where the free space becomes increasingly marginal, and where to the only way to get a little privacy is to climb over the rooftop or dive in the filthy waters of the canals. A landscape without hope. Yet in this scenario there are still children. Innocent witnesses of a story that is easier to forget, than to tell.
Kids often forced, by a greater destiny, to survive on charity, to work among toxic garbage dumps, tp sleep in home-made shacks built in cemeteries, or between the tracks of the train. After all, as Nissen writes, in Manila residents “live wherever they can find some space”.
