GERT-JAN BESSELINK: “LOST PLACES”

Lost emptiness.

A curious project of urban exploration, “Lost Places” inspired by Gert-Jan Besselink, Dutch photographer with a passion for abandoned architecture and places which have been forgotten by man, whose intention is, he tells us, “to capture the past by documenting the present”. Factories and hospitals, military bases and theme parks, entire urban areas which have been abandoned and drained of all significance, are at the centre of an investigation which has been conducted in the finest detail, from the equipment to use and useful advice on how to embark on this adventure, all of which are identified on-line on a constantly updated and ever-expanding website. From the many “lost places” we have chosen a few shots of the Aquatic Paradis in Barcelona, whose colourful desolation is even more striking than the fatal accidents which led to the theme park’s brief existence.
