CRISTIAN GUIZZO: DEFENCE PLACES

A farewell to arms.

It’s hard not to be lead to little discomfort in front of the lucid photographic research of Cristian Guizzo on disused military bases. The empty spaces, the ruined walls, the siege of vegetation

seem to point to some form of violence recently, rather than a gradual abandonment. “The end of the Cold War on the one hand,” says the architect and photographer on the sidelines of his work, “and that of conscription on the other hand, has abruptly interrupted the need for many military structures along the border with Eastern Europe”. This led to a rethinking of their functions. “The survey has gone through several places in Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia that were affected by Second World War, and that now are forced to change identity”. This work “intends to investigate social and territorial alteration at the end of an era”.
